- The easiest to way to find the drive you need is choose your computer model from the store.fastmac.com index.
Over the years, optical drives have become more compact even as they've become faster and more powerful. When replacing an older drive on some machines, a bracket is needed to fit the new drive properly into place.
Older Tibooks that shipped with a regular CD-R/DVD-ROM (not a Combo Drive) require a bracket to install a SuperDrive or new Combo Drive. G4 Cubes and G3 iBooks also need brackets. Again, choose your computer model from the store.fastmac.com index and you'll easily find the drive you need. - I have a 8x or 16x drive, but I'm burning at 2x or 4x. How come?
- First make sure you've purchased DVD media that can handle the faster speed. If you're using media you've bought for your old drive, it will only write data at the speed it is rated. If have the proper media and your drive is still not burning at the higher speed, check that you've updated your drivers (if necessary) as stated in the install manual, and that you have the latest version of your DVD burning application (i.e. Toast, iDVD, etc.). Older versions did not include the highest burn rates.
- I've gotten my drive, but I don't feel comfortable installing it. What should I do?
- We recommend that anyone purchasing a drive first download and look over the install instructions. But if you've gotten your drive and now don't feel comfortable installing it, you have a couple of choices. You can take your computer and new drive to Mac repair shop in your area who can install it. Or contact us for details on sending your machine and drive to us. We can install it for a nominal fee.
